Tips for proper usage of external hard disk

This post I am writing because I have faced the problem with the external hard disk in spite of having 20 years of work experience with computers. Follow the steps below to have the best use of Hard Disk. These are common steps to be followed without fail. My negligence about the usage had led to an unnecessary loss of money.

Note: Please do not totally rely on External Hard Disk ever!

Precautions:

1.  Do not keep the External HDD connected to the computer after completion of the task.

2.  Use the External HDD only for back up purposes

3.  Do not work with files from the external HDD itself

4.  Always work from local Hard Disk and copy the files to External HDD as a backup.

5.  When you insert External HDD to the computer and the windows gives a warning that the disk needs to be scanned for consistency be alert. Your hard disk may be on the verge of crashing!

6.  If you have power fluctuations never use External Hard Disk as power fluctuations cause major damage to the External HDD.

7.  If your external HDD gives a warning that it needs to be initialized when you open disk management utility then it is due for data recovery which will cost you around 4k plus.

8.  If you have used the External HDD as only the back up then you do not have to go for data recovery. You can easily go replacement if have warranty.

9.  Handle External HDDs carefully. If they are dropped or flung it will cause physical damage and will no longer be readable and if you have sensitive data your data recovery may cost you very dearly.

10.  Do not think you have to buy higher storage capacity external  HDDs. 1 TB hard disk has so much data and if damaged you will lose that much. If you have 2 TB data you will fill it and when lost 2 TB data will be lost. The more is the capacity higher is the loss and the recovery cost will also be higher.

Thank you for your time.
Hope your external storage device will have better HDD life
